P&G Partners with National Geographic to Capture "The Power of Clean Water"

January 1, 2018

Every year since 1993, the world has celebrated World Water Day on March 22. Established by the United Nations to draw attention to the widespread water crisis, the global community continues to work collectively toward UN Sustainable Development Goal #6 which aims to provide clean water and proper sanitation to all by 2030.

World Water Day is especially meaningful for us at P&G as we work to expand the reach and positive impact of our Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program—which has provided more than 13 billion liters of clean drinking water since 2004.

We invite you to do something special this World Water Day—take a look at the new documentary we’ve created in partnership with National Geographic, “The Power of Clean Water.” It follows the lives of three women—Antonia in Mexico, Mary in Kenya, and Veronika in Indonesia—and shows how clean water, provided through our P&G CSDW Program, has changed their lives.

All employees play a part in our efforts to be a force for good and a force for growth, so we’re hosting employee viewings of the documentary around the world, including in Singapore (where the P&G Purifier of Water packets are made at our own P&G Pioneer plant), across Latin America, and in Cincinnati… to name a few.

In announcing the new film, Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer and Community Impact Executive Sponsor, commented, “In some parts of the world, we take for granted the availability of clean water. People in countries like Mexico, Indonesia and Kenya struggle with finding clean water to drink. And without clean drinking water, it’s much harder to keep their children healthy, have them get an education and provide a better life for their families.”

“Our goal, in partnering with National Geographic, is to share these stories about the power of clean water and to inspire others to make a difference and become a part of the solution,” he continued.

In the last 25 years, 2.6 billion people have gained access to clean water but there are still 844 million people yet to reach by 2030 to achieve United Nations SDG #6.

Working more than 150 valued partners, P&G is providing more than 1 billion liters of clean drinking water every year and we continue to play our part to help end the global water crisis.

Exploring Awareness of Clean Water

To help bring awareness to the water crisis, P&G conducted a survey in early February. Survey findings show that most US consumers are concerned about the safety of their drinking water, but do not know that approximately 1 in 10 people around the world lack access to clean drinking water. Survey findings further highlighted that Americans are largely unaware of the progress that has been made to date to address the global water crisis.

Nearly 70% of respondents believe that the crisis has stayed the same or gotten worse, with almost one in four saying that the problem has become much worse. In reality, the global effort to solve the crisis is making progress. In the last 25 years, 2.6 billion people have gained access to clean water—but there are still 844 million people to reach by 2030 in order to achieve United Nations SDG #6.
